Did you know that Yellowstone National Park is a volcanic time bomb waiting to explode?
ES 1101 Physical Geology of the Earth's Interior*:
Learn why the Earth shakes, why volcanoes erupt, how rocks and minerals form and how the Earth's internal heat engine works!
- 4 credit hours (3 lecture, 3 lab)
- Prerequisite: Math 0481 with a grade of C or better or a Math Placement Test score placing the student into Math 0482
Were you aware that ice the height of the Sears Tower would have coverd the Chicago area 10,000 years ago?
ES 1102 Physical Geology of the Earth's Surface*:
Discover how rivers, groundwater, glaciers, wind, waves, and other geologic forces "redecorate" the landscape of the Earth! Use topographic maps to interpret surface features like lava flows, mountains, and landslides!
- 4 credit hours (3 lecture, 3 lab)
- Prerequisite: Math 0481 with a grade of C or better or a Math Placement Test score placing the student into Math 0482
Believe it or not: Illinois was once located along the equator, was submerged beneath a shallow sea and teemed with tropical reef organisms!
ES 2102 Earth History and Plate Tectonics:
Learn how the Earth was formed and about the physical and biological processes that have changed the primitive Earth over the past 4.6 billion years. Learn about the many mountain-building events and the history of life on our planet.
- 4 credit hours (3 lecture, 2 lab)
- Prerequisite: ES 1101 or 1102
"A roadcut is to a geologist as a stethoscope is to a doctor." John McPhee, Basin and Range
ES 2103 Geologic Field Investigations
Study the crust of the Earth. Put your eyeballs on the outcrop and study the wonders of the geologic kingdom firsthand in this 10- to 14-day geologic excursion to a selected region of the United States or abroad.
- 4 credit hours (3 lecture, 2 lab)
- Prerequisite: ES 1101, 1102 or 1140
Other Course Offerings in Geology:
- Center for Independent Learning (1101, 1102)
- Field Studies
- Special Topics Courses
